After Sandy

The fine line that regular photojournalists have to deal with when covering disasters and conflicts is something I have been wrestling with after the monster storm Sandy hit the Northeast coast. My first instinct after it tore through new York was to survey my neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn– which was pretty much untouched aside from some fallen trees. The pictures I took were tame compared to what I was seeing in Red Hook, the Rockaways, and New Jersey.

So I aimed to volunteer sometime during the week. Which led me to the temporary shelter at Brooklyn Tech HS with residents from a home in Coney Island Surf ave. Which has led me to Red Hook where the projects are still without power and fairway supermarket is done for the time being.

I have carried my camera with me through through my volunteer work but still have not been comfortable enough to start snapping away aside from some Instagram pictures. Maybe if I were on assignment that nagging sensation would be less of a hindrance. But this is for all the Ben Lowys and Radcliffe Royes  doing an amazing job covering the recovery efforts and aftermath
